I pushed open the door to the penthouse and motioned for Caterina to go in. The look in her eyes said she had a million questions going through her mind. But at this point, she knew me well enough to let it rest. I was right not to trust her family.

She shot a glance toward the window. The city lights touched every piece of furniture and cast a blue glow across the floor. When she didn’t find Massimo standing there, she went up the stairs and straight into the bathroom.

I did the same. For one, I could still feel her hands on my body and the scent of her arousal tainted every breath I took. I needed to wash it all off and stay focused. Bracing my hands on the warm stone, I let the water soothe me and wash away the day. Next to me, Caterina stood under the second shower head, hugging a soapy puff to her chest. “Can I at least ask for one thing?”

I slow-blinked and glared at my reflection. “That depends on the request.”

“Can you listen to him first? Really listen? I can see you’ve already made up your mind about him like you did with Dad.” Her erratic breath made her chest rise and fall.

Fuck me. Why did I look? I closed the space between us. “Michael put a target on his back himself. He did that, not me. And yeah, I made up my mind about him two months ago. But for you, I took a detour. A detour that almost cost me my life today. I’m done granting requests. Even if it’s coming from you.”

“Rex.” She slipped her hand up my chest and into my hair.
